The film centers on Clarice Starling, a student in the FBI training academy who graduated with a degree in Psychology. Starling is assigned to interview Dr. Hannibal Lector, a brilliant psychiatrist and a violent psychopath, who is serving life behind bars for various acts of murder and cannibalism. Starling's superior believes that Lector may have insight into the current case of "Buffalo Bill" and that as a young attractive woman, Clarice will be just the bait to draw Lector out.
